Historical High CAPE/Negative Lifted Index/High Heat Index
The purpose of this page is to highlight measured soundings with a
surface lifted index -10 or lower in Iowa, Minnesota, or the Great
Lakes states, and corresponding heat indices and severe storm reports.
After all, the southern Plains stations can get 3000-4000 J/kg of CAPE
(measured) many times per year, it is unusual to have over 3000 J/kg
measured in the north. I have modified most of the soundings for the
surface temperature/surface dew point and this is shown with the light
green curve. I don't have the ability to calculate the new CAPE values.
The lifted index maps actually show the lifted index for the surface
temperature/surface dew point, and not what is shown on the side of the
sounding diagrams (mixed layer lifted index). The heat index maps are
for the exact time the soundings were launched (1 hour before) - note
on some of these maps, heat indices were up to 120 degrees.
